Summary

Summary

This selection of Thomas Hardy’s poetry does full justice to its humanity, integrity, humor, and evocative power, ranging from charming anthology pieces such as “Weathers” to the great love poems he wrote after the death of his first wife and his meditations on war and philosophy. The poems—nearly eighty in total—are set in the context of Hardy’s life and thoughts, including personal writings by him and those closest to him.

“In this recording, examples of [Hardy’s] poetry from early to late are interspersed with brief notes and quotes from his prose writing that put the selections in context…Read expressively, with particular attention to mood.” AudioFile

Author Bio: Thomas Hardy

Thomas Hardy (1840–1928), English poet, dramatist, and novelist, was born on the Egdon Heath in Dorset. He studied in Dorchester and apprenticed to an architect before leaving for London, where he began to write. Unable to find a public for his poetry, which idealized the rural life, he turned to the novel and met with success as well as controversy. The strong public reaction against some of his darker themes turned him back to writing verse. Today several of his novels are considered masterpieces of tragedy.
