Summary

Summary

Having finished Texas Standoff, seven-time Spur Award winner Elmer Kelton-the Western Writers of America's "Best Western Writer of All Time"-took his leave with 50 notches on his gunbelt of classics. When Ranger Andy Pickard is sent to central Texas to investigate a series of killings and cattle thefts, two prominent cattlemen are prime suspects. But the rise of a gang of masked vigilantes and the arrival of a notorious hired gunman complicate matters.

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“Elmer Kelton does not write Westerns. He writes fine novels set in the West. Here a reader meets flesh-and-blood people of an earlier time, in a story that will grab you and hold you from the first to the last page.”  Dee Brown, author of the New York Times bestseller Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
“This is a fine example of [Kelton’s] craftsmanship. Character, plot, and the spirit of the Old West combine to take readers into the lives of our forebears.” Booklist
