Summary

Summary

One of the finest American authors of the 20th century, Wallace Stegner compiled an impressive collection of accolades during his lifetime, including a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, a National Book Award, and three O. Henry Awards. His last novel, Crossing to Safety is the quiet yet stirring tale of two couples who form a lifelong bond.

Hard-working Larry and Sally Morgan have little in common with well-heeled Sid and Charity Lang. But as the men begin their college teaching careers during the Great Depression, the pairs become close. Over the years their friendships grow, driven by Charity’s luminous personality. Then in 1972, they enter a final chapter when Charity, dying of cancer, announces her intention “to do it right.”

Hailed as a “magnificently crafted story” (Washington Post Book World), this rich tale is the final masterpiece in Stegner’s remarkable career.
