A young writer, living abroad, returns home to his native Argentina to say goodbye to his dying father. In his parents' house, he finds a cache of documents—articles, maps, photographs—and
unwittingly begins to unearth his father's obsession with the disappearance of a local man. Suddenly he comes face to face with the ghosts of Argentina's dark political past and long-forgotten
memories of his family's resistance against an oppressive military regime.
Told through the fragments of the narrator's investigation—as he pieces together not only a portrait of his father but also the legacy of an entire generation—My Fathers' Ghost Is Climbing in
the Rain is a completely original story of family and remembrance: an audacious accomplishment by an acclaimed new voice.

Editorial Reviews
“Pron’s novel haunts me. Its unsentimental account of what
it was like for a child of defeated leftists to grow up in Argentina in the
shadow of the 1970s turned my heart upside down…Suspense swells through the
early sections, as Pron nests mystery within mystery, carefully tending the big
enigma…Pron is brilliant on the topic of growing up in the aftermath of heroic
collapse. What’s more, Mara Faye Lethem’s translation gets his tone of numbed
resignation just right.” —New York Times Book Review
“A moving
meditation on trauma, memory, and home, beautifully translated…[It] tugs at the
heartstrings…This philosophical novel, which probes the thorniest of
ontological and epistemological questions, compellingly displays—as well as explores—fiction’s
power to unearth the most deeply buried emotional truths…Pron expresses
inarticulacy with real eloquence.” —Independent (UK)
“An enthralling
novel…Pron writes in a first-person voice that feels more confessional than
fictional.” —New Yorker
“A modern
masterpiece written with beauty and purpose—this is a novel about everything
that most matters in the world.” —Deborah Levy, Man Booker Prize nominee
“Hugely rewarding
and deeply unsettling.” —New York Journal of Books
“My Fathers’ Ghost
Is Climbing in the Rain draws you in and holds your attention like a crime
novel. But this absorbing new work by Argentine writer Patricio Pron is too
complex to fit into any ready-made genre…Pron tells his story deftly [and]
paints a vivid picture of the aftermath of Argentina’s tortured recent history…A
beautifully crafted novel, rich in metaphors and not devoid of humor despite
its troubling subject.” —Washington Independent Review of Books
“Deeply affecting…Pron
uses a Bolaño-like style.” —Metro (UK)
“Startlingly
brilliant…The narrator at first reads like a modern update of Sartre’s
Roquentin from Nausea…As
the book progresses, Pron’s intense and exquisitely described interiority of
the early parts slowly falls prey to the pull of a personal, communal, and
national history that ever more firmly stakes its claims on the narrator…This
book should appeal as much to the lovers of the philosophical or modernist
novel as it should to those who, upon their first exposure to Dostoevsky’s
Underground Man or Hamsun’s starving student, felt the urge to reach into the
text and slap the main character upside the head…Pron succeeds beautifully.” —Daily Beast
“Patricio Pron is an immense talent, a daring
writer with an absolutely unique voice. My Fathers’ Ghost Is Climbing in the
Rain is a marvel.” —Daniel Alarcón, award-winning author of Lost City Radio
“This is an
extraordinary book, and Pron is an extraordinarily gifted writer.” —Betsy Burton, KUER radio
“In the face of denial and forgetting, Pron has stitched the experiences of the activists, their survivors, and those who came later into a narrative that ties the individual to collective memory and a family’s history to a nation’s.” —Publishers Weekly
“From a major new voice in Spanish literature,
this novel should grant Pron a much-deserved readership in the English-speaking
world…A melancholy and chilling work of postmodernism, examining family,
memory, and what collective fear does to a society.” —Booklist
“This is a brilliant, unforgettable novel. I was
so entertained by Patricio Pron’s inventive, poetic, deranging sentences that I
found myself thinking of Lewis Carroll. Carroll’s prose is Wonderland, Pron’s
is his own amazingly personal, familial, national Darkland.” —Francisco Goldman, author of Say Her Name
“A sublime accomplishment, radiant and
wrenching. You’ll never see Argentina—or fathers or sons or the human soul—the
same way again.” —Carolina De Robertis, author of Perla
“A moving exploration of guilt and memory and an
unflinching study of what history can do to us. Pron opens his eyes where the
rest of us would rather close them and keep them closed.” —Juan Gabriel Vásquez, author of The Informers
“With subtle intelligence, poetic insight, and
exquisite style, My Fathers’ Ghost Is Climbing in the Rain confirms
Pron’s position as one of the finest novelists writing in Spanish today.” —Alberto Manguel, author of All Men Are Liars
“This is a riveting
story, elegantly translated.” —Charles R. Larson, CounterPunch
