A 2004 National Book Award Winner

A National Book Award finalist from PEN/Faulkner Award nominee Lily Tuck, The News from Paraguay blends historical fact and fiction into a mesmerizing and sweeping masterpiece that traces the exotic romance between an Irish beauty and the future dictator of Paraguay.

In 1854, while riding through the gardens of Paris, Franco Lopez sees Ella Lynch astride a splendid mare. The bright blue feather that drifts from Ella’s blonde hair lures Franco to the young courtesan. Soon, he has taken her home to Paraguay, where he begins a flamboyant and ruthless rise to power. Ella will bear his children, ignore his mistresses, and send vivid letters back to her friends in France. As Franco’s grandiose ambitions lead Paraguay to war, Ella’s accounts capture the beauty and harshness of life in this lush country.

Editorial Reviews

“Vivid, intriguing…Tuck brings to life the lush, sensual, and brutal world of 19th-century Paraguay.” Entertainment Weekly
“The perfect setting for Tuck’s dark wit.” New Yorker
“Tuck’s prose is elegant, the subject well researched.” New York Times Book Review
“Decorous detail and vivid imagery.” Los Angeles Times
“Impressively researched, lushly written…a splendid realization if its rich subject and Tuck’s best so far.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“The story unfolds through Tuck’s elegant narration…The author’s research is impressive…but never overbearing as she explores the life of a spoiled, kept woman in a foreign land, as well as the lives, both high and low, of those around her…When Paraguay finds itself at odds with neighboring countries, the novel chronicles the various tragedies and defeats with a cool and unswerving eye. Tuck’s novel may not be for the faint of heart, but it is a rich and rewarding read.” Publishers Weekly
