Summary

Summary

The only audio edition of Eldritch Tales authorized by the H. P. Lovecraft Estate!

Following the phenomenal success of Necronomicon, its companion volume brings together Lovecraft's remaining major stories plus his weird poetry, a number of obscure revisions, and some notable nonfiction, including the seminal critical essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature."

Gathering together in chronological order the rest of Lovecraft's rarely seen but extraordinary short fiction, this collection includes the entirety of the long-out-of-print collection of thirty-six sonnets "Fungi from Yuggoth." Lovecraft died at the age of forty-seven, but in his short life he turned out dozens of stories that changed the face of horror. His extraordinary imagination spawned both the Elder God Cthulhu and his eldritch cohorts, as well as the strangely compelling town of Innsmouth, all of which feature here.

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“One is drawn into Lovecraft by the very air of plausibility and characteristic understatement of the prose, the question being, ‘When will the weirdness strike?’” Joyce Carol Oates, praise for the author
“In this companion piece to the classic Necronomicon, an ensemble cast proves that Lovecraft’s fantastically unusual scenarios and grim elegance of phrasing work best when read aloud. All the narrators bring their own interpretations to these tales, and the collection is strengthened by the diversity of their approaches. The works are frequently complex, often jarring, and profoundly surreal, and the variation of tone, pacing, and voices helps to keep listeners engaged, while the narrators themselves provide vivid characterizations with chilling stoicism. Some narrators choose an atmospheric world-building technique; others favor a direct realism-based strategy. While their storytelling tactics may differ, each narrator’s delivery contains a clarity and comprehension that serve to make these pieces accessible and engrossing for listeners.” AudioFile
“A full cast of narrators contributes to this audiobook, performing Lovecraft’s visions of creeping horrors, insanity, and phantasms with appropriately eerie enthusiasm…These narrations create the perfect tension between the seemingly rational storyteller and the unnerving events that unfold.” Booklist (audio review)
