A mesmerizing psychological thriller about how a secret can bind two friends together forever … or tear them apart.

Kit Owens harbored only modest ambitions for herself when the mysterious Diane Fleming appeared in her high school chemistry class. But Diane’s academic brilliance lit a fire in Kit, and the two developed an unlikely friendship. Until Diane shared a secret that changed everything between them.

More than a decade later, Kit thinks she’s put Diane behind her forever, and she’s begun to fulfill the scientific dreams Diane awakened in her. But the past comes roaring back when she discovers that Diane is her competition for a position both women covet, taking part in groundbreaking new research led by their idol. Soon enough, the two former friends find themselves locked in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse that threatens to destroy them both.

Editorial Reviews

“Narrator Chloe Cannon delivers an elegant and emotionally devastating performance of Abbott’s latest psychological thriller…Cannon sounds so authentic that it’s impossible not to be moved by Kit’s aspirations…Through past and present timelines, Cannon captures Kit’s increasing desperation to escape Diane’s darkness and find a better life for herself.” AudioFile
“Magnetic…Darkly effective, uneasy-making, and beautifully, absorbingly written.” Meg Wolitzer, New York Times bestselling author
“Dark, smart, twisty, and thoroughly addictive. No one maps the thrilling and sometimes dangerous intensity of female friendships better than Megan Abbott.” Tom Perrotta, New York Times bestselling author
“Trust the nimble Abbott to elevate this smart page-turner beyond cat-fight into a tense battle between morality and ambition.” People
“Abbott excels in evoking the strange mix of camaraderie and rivalry that exists in academic research…What makes it stand out is Abbott’s expert dissection of women’s friendships and rivalries.” New York Times
“Steadily intensifies its atmosphere of claustrophobia to the point of constriction. Indeed, this macabre story makes Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum,” (the granddaddy of all ‘walls-closing-in’ tales) seem as airy and expansive as the Grand Canyon.” Washington Post
“Smart, twisty, penetrating.” Pop Sugar
“A white-hot look at the ways in which envy perverts ambition, and our secrets make us sick, Give Me Your Hand is the ultimate unsettling read of the summer.” Nylon
“In Abbott’s deft hands, friendship is fused to rivalry, and ambition to fear, with an unsettling level of believability.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“[A] nuanced tale of soured friendships, blood-soaked ambition, and desperate murders…No writer can touch Abbott in the realm of twisted desire and relationships between women, both intimate and feral.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Abbott plunges us deep into a vividly realized world of intense competition and creates life-or-death stakes where we wouldn’t have known to look for them…This is a brilliant riff on hard science, human nature, and the ultimate unknowability of the human brain.” Booklist (starred review)
