Summary

The Marriage of a Marquis is the inaugural volume of the Palik series from the North American Jules Verne Society and BearManor Media. It includes two of Jules Verne’s early humorous stories in their first English translation: “The Marriage of Mr. Anselme des Tilleuls” (translated by Edward Baxter) and “Jédédias Jamet, or The Tale of an Inheritance” (translated by Kieran O’Driscoll). The accompanying commentary by leading Verne scholars discusses the mission of the Palik series, the history and problems of Verne translation, and the history of the stories themselves. The stories, rising to the level of genuine farce, will be a surprise to many Verne readers.
