Summary
Summary
In Operation Shakespeare, investigative journalist John Shiffman traces a high-risk undercover operation launched by an elite undercover Homeland Security unit created to stop the Iranians, Russians, Chinese, Pakistanis, and North Koreans from acquiring sophisticated American-made electronics capable of guiding missiles, jamming radar, and triggering countless weapons—from wireless IEDs to nuclear bombs. The U.S. agents must outwit not only enemy brokers but also American manufacturers and global bankers who are too willing to put profit over national security. The three-year sting climaxes when the U.S. agents lure the Iranian broker to a former Soviet republic with the promise of American-made radar, fighter-jet, and missile components, then secretly drag him back to the United States, where he is held in secret for two years. The laptop the Iranian carries into the sting provides the CIA with a virtual road map to Tehran's clandestine effort to obtain U.S. military technology.

Editorial Reviews
“Pulitzer Prize finalist and author
John Shiffman has penetrated [these] secrets to bring back the character-driven
story of these national security operations. A gripping, far-ranging account of
the tireless undercover efforts to save soldiers, sailors, and other citizens.” —Barnes&Noble.com, editorial review
“Heart-pounding…So mesmerizing I couldn’t put it down…This book stuns.” —Providence Journal
“A tale that seems almost
ready-made for Hollywood…A cross between a great detective story and an
intricate spy yarn from John le Carré, with a cast of burly American agents,
slippery international arms dealers, and an Iranian agent.” —Philadelphia Inquirer
“One might think that curbing the smuggling of weapons to America’s enemies
would be a significant priority for the US government. One would be wrong.” —New York Post
“Vivid…An impressive and important
work…Shiffman illuminates the network of smugglers, brokers, governments, and
corporations that facilitates the illegal sale and shipment of sensitive
American military technologies to foreign enemies…The book has the glamour of a
spy novel and the gravity of a meticulously researched exposé.” —Christian Science Monitor
“Exciting and eye-opening…A character-driven symphony of moving parts, with fascinating personalities.” —Publisher’s Weekly
“A well-organized, troubling exposé.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Shiffman gives listeners a lot of
background information on the way stings and illegal activities work, and
narrator David Drummond clearly delivers the details. But the duo is at their
best when the narrative turn to the players. At first, the operation moves
slowly as the agents set up the Iranian dealer. By the end of the sting, the
drama comes on full bore, all the more so for being built on real-life
characters. Drummond’s voice work builds as well, adding more tension as the
operation progresses.” —AudioFile
Exciting and eye-opening . . . a character-driven symphony of moving parts, with fascinating personalities. —Publisher's Weekly
