Summary

Summary

In Reykjavík Nights, a stunning prequel to his critically acclaimed Inspector Erlendur series, Arnaldur Indriđason gives his devoted fans a real shock.

Erlendur is a young officer assigned to traffic duties. He is not yet a detective. He works nights. Reykjavík’s nights are full of car crashes, robberies, fights, drinking, and sometimes an unexplained death.

One night a homeless man Erlendur knows is found drowned. Then a young woman on her way home from a club vanishes and both cases go cold.

But Erlendur’s instincts tell him that the fates of these two victims are worth pursuing. He is inexorably drawn into a world where everyone is either in the dark or on the run.

“Indriđason has crafted a stellar prequel to his popular series, offering both insight into Erlendur’s gloom and a glimpse of what he was like before the cloud settled in fully.”Booklist

Editorial Reviews

“Puts Iceland on the map as a major destination for enthusiasts of Nordic crime fiction.” New York Times Book Review
“Keeps readers guessing until the very last pages.” Washington Post Book World
“Indridason and Stieg Larsson have produced two of the best crime novels of the year.” Independent (London)
“In this riveting prequel set in late-1960s Reykjavík, Indridason plumbs the backstory of his series lead, somber Inspector Erlendur Sveinsson…His obsession with Hannibal and what happened to him foreshadows the concerns of the more mature Erlendur in books set years later…The investigation slowly but surely gathers powerful, page-turning momentum. This installment stands on its own, but it’s all the more impressive for giving new insight into Erlendur.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Narrator George Guidall is at his very best as he narrates this prequel to the highly regarded mystery series featuring Inspector Erlendur…Guidall captures the kindness and persistence of the young man…Listeners join the police as they experience the humor, sorrow, and terror of day-to-day crime…Guidall captures all the tragedy of Hannibal’s story, so it’s all the more satisfying when his killers are revealed.” AudioFile
