Summary

Summary

A second-chance queer romance about two teens whose in-world D&D characters fall in love, but in real life, things are more complicated, perfect for lovers of Ashley Poston and Becky Albertalli.

Harper Reid’s summer is not off to a great start. After the death of her grandpa, she moves across the country, leaving her friends and Dungeons & Dragons group behind.

She wasn’t exactly planning to start her senior year on the farm where she spent her childhood summers, but running into Ollie Shifflet—former best friend and first crush—makes things much better. When Harper discovers Ollie and her friends are starting a new Dungeons & Dragons campaign, she quickly joins the group.

As Harper and Ollie reconnect in the real world, romantic tension begins to build between Harper’s brash barbarian and Ollie’s proud paladin, but it’s all just part of the game, right?

Ollie’s future depends on keeping her bisexuality private, while Harper’s dreams include an out-and-proud life in their rural town. But as their feelings continue to grow with each gaming session, their relationship begins threatening everything they’ve worked so hard to build.

As the school year comes to a close and the campaign’s final boss looms on the horizon, Harper and Ollie must decide: are their feelings more than just a fantasy? Because if they want a second chance at love, they’ll have to fight for it, both in-game and in real life.

Editorial Reviews

“This feel-good, queer coming-of-age story will circulate well in libraries with diverse young fantasy and Dungeons & Dragons fans.” School Library Journal (starred review)
“The white teens offer loving portrayals of young people defying societal norms, and their difficulties manage to be gut-wrenching without crossing the line into a spiral of unhappiness…Offers a thoughtful look at the fear of being different.” Kirkus Reviews
“Gallucci’s higher pitched voice and nervousness sound appropriate for a closeted teenager and all her cringe moments…while Naudus’s deeper voice and even tone portray the confident character of Harper…Santana’s masculine voice helps distinguish the fantasy storytelling of their D&D game.” AudioFile
“A sweet, joyful tribute to dungeons, dragons, and small-town queer life." James L. Sutter, co-creator of the Pathfinder and Starfinder roleplaying games
“This joyous, loving book is the perfect blend of nerd culture and rom-com goodness.” Beth Revis, New York Times bestselling author
“Perfect for readers in search of charming second-chance romance and queer found-family, and all the TTRPG puns.” Linsey Miller, author of Prince of Song & Sea

Author Bio: M. K. England

M. K. England grew up on the Space Coast of Florida watching shuttle launches from the backyard. These days, they call rural Virginia home, where there are many more cows but a tragic lack of rockets. In between marathon writing sessions, M. K. can be found drowning in fandom, rolling critical hits at the gaming table, digging in the garden, or feeding their video game addiction. They probably love Star Wars more than you do. M. K. is the author of The Disasters, Spellhacker, and other forthcoming novels. Follow them at MKEngland.com.
