Summary

Summary

While incarcerated at the end of the tumultuous 1960s—a decade he helped to define—Bobby Seale wrote his first memoir, Seize the Time, originally published by Random House in 1970.

Bobby Seale—Chairman of the Black Panther Party, defendant in the Chicago conspiracy case, and one of the New Haven Panther 14—writes from jail about himself, his party, and its leadership: the black men who have changed themselves, have changed America, and led society to question the foundation of our liberties and institutions.

Editorial Reviews

“There is power in hearing history from the people who lived it. Bobby Seale’s Seize the Time brings history to life through the voice of a man who stood at the center of it. This book is raw, revealing, and deeply personal, offering a window into a movement that forever changed America. This book is as necessary now as it was when these words were first written.”  —Blair Underwood, Peabody Award–winning actor and director and New York Times bestselling author
“Growing up in Oakland, you heard the name Bobby Seale different than the rest of the country heard it. Bobby, Huey, and the entire Black Panther Party carried a certain level of respect. Seize the Time is why—it’s the real story from a man from Oakland, who built something that lasted.”  —Gary Payton, NBA Hall-of-Famer
“One of the most important things we can do to preserve and share the legacy of the Black Panther Party is to make sure younger generations can hear directly from the Panthers themselves. Too often, the history of the Party has been interpreted, distorted, or told by people who were never part of it. Seize the Time is different. This is Bobby Seale telling the history of the movement he and Huey built together. His firsthand account is invaluable, and bringing this book back to readers helps ensure that Bobby and Huey’s voices, ideas, and the true history of the Black Panther Party as they created and lived it continue to live on.” —Fredrika Newton, president and cofounder, Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation and Black Panther Party Museum
“As a writer of historical fiction, I know how important it is to recover the voices history too often reduces to footnotes. In Seize the Time, Bobby Seale does something even more powerful: he gives us history in his own voice, preserving the people, the movement, and the truth from the inside.” —Victoria Christopher Murray, NAACP Image Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of Stand Your Ground
“I first met Chairman Bobby Seale in the weeks following the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Little Bobby Hutton. After hearing Bobby speak, Aaron Dixon and I made a beeline to him and told him we were from Seattle and wanted to start a chapter of the Black Panther Party. The next day, at Bobby Hutton’s funeral, the fire was lit in us. Bobby later came to Seattle, sat in our parents’ home, laid down the rules of the Party, told us we had to read, organize, and be prepared to defend our community, and then left for the East Coast to continue building chapters across the country. His leadership, together with the Free Huey movement, helped transform the Black Panther Party into a national and ultimately international organization. Bobby Seale was pivotal to that growth, and he will always be the chairman I remember.” —Elmer Dixon, former field lieutenant, Seattle Chapter, Black Panther Party; board chair, Seattle Black Panther Party Legacy Group
“A call for people to become advocates for equality.” —Tony Wolk, historian

Author Bio: Bobby Seale

Bobby Seale is a revolutionary, political activist, author, and the only living founder of the Black Panther Party. Born October 22, 1936, Seale helped build one of the most influential political and community organizations of the twentieth century, advancing a platform centered on self-determination, political education, community empowerment, and protection from police brutality.

As chairman of the Black Panther Party, Seale helped guide the organization from its beginnings in Oakland into a national movement known not only for political resistance but also for community programs addressing hunger, health care, education, and social inequality. He is the author of Seize the Time, his landmark first-person account of the Party’s rise, along with A Lonely Rage, Barbeque’n with Bobby, and Power to the People: The World of the Black Panthers.

Now ninety years old, Seale remains deeply connected to Oakland, where he lives with his wife, Leslie, and daughter, J’aime Bobbie Seale. As the Black Panther Party celebrates its sixtieth anniversary, his life today is centered not only on preserving the history he helped create, but on ensuring that its lessons, values, and legacy remain accessible to the generations that follow. Through the Bobby Seale Legacy Foundation, he continues that work in partnership with the Huey P. Newton Foundation and the Black Panther Party Museum.

Seale is also completing I, Bobby, his forthcoming memoir, a personal reflection on his life and the rise and fall of the Black Panther Party, written to preserve the truth of what was built, what was lost, and what he hopes the next generation will carry forward.
