Summary

A traveling businessman is snatched off of an Upper East Side street in broad daylight—or so it appears to the eight-year-old girl who is the crime’s only witness. The perp leaves a token at the site of the kidnapping—a miniature noose. A crime scene this puzzling demands forensic expertise of the highest order. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are called in to investigate.

Rhyme and Sachs’ investigation takes an unexpected turn when a similar kidnapping occurs across the Atlantic in a small town outside of Naples, Italy. The killer’s MO is bizarre and frightening. Obsessed with music, the man records the final breaths of his victims, then uses a keyboard sampler to compose an otherworldly tune that is then posted online.

The search for the killer will become a complex case of international cooperation—yet not all is as it seems, and soon Sachs and Rhyme find themselves playing a dangerous game with shadowy parties from across the globe.

Review Quotes

“There could be no better narrator for this audiobook than Edoardo Ballerini. With his stellar acting talents and language skills, he moves fluidly among male and female characters speaking English, Italian, and English with a musical Italian accent. He fully captures the impatient and brilliant Lincoln Rhyme, who, from his wheelchair, can express himself only with his voice. He also brings to life the imperious Italian prosecutor, the earnest forest inspector who stumbles into this high-profile case, and the insane murderer. Ballerini gives each character his or her unique portrait while keeping listeners on the edges of their seats. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.”

The Burial Hour is so devilishly tricky you can practically smell the sulfur fumes…In a bold plot twist, Deaver folds Rhyme’s inquiries into a broader investigation of a humanitarian challenge shared by the whole world. Takes guts, that does.”

New York Times Book Review

“Deaver is a master of plot twists, and they are abundant in this story that keeps the reader guessing about who can be trusted and what’s behind the motivations of the abductor. Putting Rhyme and Sachs in unknown territory showcases a different side of their characters. Making them jump through hoops to keep international peace gives the story an extra edge.”

Washington Post

“Deaver is a genius when it comes to manipulation and deception. Stellar plot twists are in full abundance.”

Associated Press

“Deaver takes fans to the edge in this one and dangles them over the cliff…One of the best books of 2016.”

Suspense Magazine

“Proves once again Jeffery Deaver is a brilliantly intricate novelist…Intriguingly detailed.”
