Winner of an AudioFile Earphones Award

Ten years ago, Craig Johnson wrote his first short story, the Hillerman Award-winning "Old Indian Trick." This was one of the earliest appearances of the sheriff who would go on to star in Johnson's bestselling, award-winning novels and the A&E hit series Longmire. Each Christmas Eve thereafter, fans rejoiced when Johnson sent out a new short story featuring an episode in Walt's life that doesn't appear in the novels; over the years, many have asked why they can't buy the stories in book form. Wait for Signs collects those beloved stories-and one entirely new story, "Petunia, Bandit Queen of the Bighorns"-for the very first time in a single volume, regular trade hardcover. With glimpses of Walt's past from the incident in "Ministerial Aide," when the sheriff is mistaken for a deity, to the hilarious "Messenger," where the majority of the action takes place in a Port-A-Potty, Wait for Signs is a necessary addition to any Longmire fan's shelf and a wonderful way to introduce new readers to the fictional world of Absaroka County, Wyoming.

“For a decade, Craig Johnson has brightened the holidays of his fans with a Christmas Eve short story featuring Wyoming county sheriff Walter Longmire. Now these tales, plus one previously unpublished, are collected in a hardcover destined to become a nightstand favorite. (P.S. There is a huge natural constituency for this seasonal treat: Readers of Johnson’s ten Longmire novels and one novella, plus the millions of fans who watch A&E’s new re-blossoming Longmire TV series.)” Barnes&Noble.com, editorial review
“For fans of Johnson’s Absaroka County sheriff, all the familiar characters fill these stories—Walt, Vic, Henry, Cady, and of course the wild, open spaces of Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains.” Library Journal (starred review)
“This story collection featuring the ironic Wyoming sheriff is a must…[Walt Longmire is] one of the most memorable characters is crime fiction today.” Publishers Weekly
“Heartwarming…Sample, savor, and save these [short stories] for special occasions.” Booklist
“Each of these twelve short stories featuring Sheriff Walt Longmire and the regular Absaroka County cast was released in print on subsequent Christmas Eves, to the delight of Craig Johnson’s fans. They’ve now been gathered together on audio—along with one new story—fittingly delivered by George Guidall, who narrates the Longmire novels. Guidall’s stellar insight into the characters and their motivations continues to grow with each new production. Every time he seems perfect, he tops himself as he keys into the delicate balance of spiritual concerns, compassion, humor, and social commentary. These elements come through in each story, but especially so in ‘Ministerial Aid.’ Guidall embodies Walt’s concern for his citizens, his amusement at a character’s belief that he’s Jesus, and his shock at the fury rained on an abusive husband. Every story is an aural treat delectable enough to revisit. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.” AudioFile
