Summary

Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award

Alex Gino, the Lambda Literary Award–winning author of George, is back with another sensitive tale based on increasingly relevant social justice issues. Jilly thinks she’s figured out how life works. But when her sister Emma is born deaf, she realizes how much she still has to learn. A big fantasy reader, Jilly connects with another fan, Derek, who is a deaf black ASL user. She goes to Derek for advice but doesn’t always know the best way to ask for it and makes some mistakes along the way. Jilly has to step back to learn to be an ally, a sister, and a friend, understanding that life works in different ways for different people, and that being open to change can make you change in the best possible ways.

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“Jilly comes to recognize that people face different challenges—and sees how her own actions can impact situations for better and for worse. If the book’s dialogue sometimes seems to exist in the service of its lessons, its thoughtful handling of characters and dynamics offers fodder for further discussion about privilege in all its forms. As Jilly’s Aunt Alicia says, ‘Nothing changes if we don’t talk.’” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Author Bio: Alex Gino

Alex Gino loves glitter, ice cream, gardening, awe-ful puns, and stories that reflect the diversity and complexity of being alive. Born and raised on Staten Island, NY, they are prouder of graduating from Stuyvesant High School than from the University of Pennsylvania. They have been involved with queer and trans activism for twenty years, and currently serve on the Board of Directors of NOLOSE, an all-volunteer body-positive organization committed to fat, queer, feminist, anti-oppression ideology. Having moved across the country in an old RV during the summer of 2008, they enjoy the heck out of living in Oakland, California.
